The Teaching American History - New Media Classroom (TAH-NMC) program is a three-year collaboration with Pennsylvania's Greencastle Antrim School District. Located in historic Franklin County, a noted locale of Civil War history, TAH-NMC will train middle school and high school American history educators to become leaders of educational technology integration through a school year-long faculty development process. This training includes a summer institute, classroom visits, and follow-up workshops.

The program will begin in June 2004 and end in June 2007. Our goal is to help teachers:

  • revitalize teaching of American history;
  • rethink their classroom practice;
  • sharpen technology skills;
  • develop strategies for using new technological tools in the classroom; and
  • advance active learning in students.
A 4-day intensive summer institute is held in June. The institute features presentations by history and education scholars along with multimedia curriculum resource developers. Workshops will address such historical periods or themes as the Great Migration, conflict, freedom, early America, and immigration . Each session involves hands-on application, where teachers learn to employ new media effectively and comprehensively:

  • to find and evaluate resources on the Web and CD-ROMs;
  • to create new curriculum;
  • to enhance the writing process; and
  • to incorporate classroom management and presentation software into instruction.

To deepen the impact of the summer institute, TAH-NMC teachers participate in school year-long activities. TAH-NMC will conduct classroom visits and follow-up workshops for to support sustained new media curriculum integration and methodology. Visits and workshops address such issues as curriculum planning, identification of resources, and discussion of new scholarship.

Participating faculty receive a set of print and multimedia curriculum resources -- from online archives and texts to interactive Web conferencing tools -- that offer exciting opportunities to enhance content learning and develop basic literacy skills to improve student performance and motivation.
