Discover DNA-inspired dance and music. Dancer/choreographer John Pennington, Pomona College, CA, will perform a piece he composed in collaboration with a molecular biologist and an artist. The Patrick Grant Group will perform a musical suite from GENOME: The Autobiography of a Species in Twenty-Three Movements. Lori Belilove & Company, resident troupe of The Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, will present a new work, commissioned for this event.

Co-sponsored by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center and the Science Center.

John Pennington / SPR Synthesis
SPR Synthesis is a collaborative performance/installation piece by scientist Robert Sinsheimer, dance artist John Pennington and visual artist Susan Rankaitis. All three collaborators share an interest in interactions and dialogues between scientists and artists that brought them to this unique interactive project. Using text written about the Human Genome Project by Dr. Sinsheimer, John Pennington has choreographed and performs his dance/theater piece in front of a combined media artwork made by Susan Rankaitis. Rankaitis' 8 x 14' work on paper, mounted on a curved wall, incorporates references to Mr. Pennington's supplemental text and movement designs, along with fragments of text by Dr. Sinsheimer as well as images related to genetics.

Patrick Grant ... "a modern electronic master...(he) is a totally wired contemporary musician who combines live performance with cutting edge technology", writes The New Music Connoisseur about this emerging American composer. According to the Village Voice, Grant's distinct sound has "...a driving and rather harsh energy redolent of rock, as well as a clean sense of melodicism ... the music's momentum and intricate cross-rhythms rarely let up, making the occasional infectious tunes that emerge all the more beautiful for surprise."

Lori Belilove & Company
Lori Belilove & Company creates and performs works that highlight the unique qualities of Isadora Duncan's repertoire, ranging from the early works to the later tragic solos, all with a purity of style and execution of movement hailed by the international press.

As the resident performing company of the Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, Lori Belilove & Company has toured dance festivals in Europe, Mexico, South America, and Canada. In Athens, Greece the company's performance in Isadora's newly restored home received national TV coverage. The company toured three cities in Germany: Cologne, Aachen and Bonn and appeared at the Design Exchange in Toronto. In 1996 the company was invited to perform at the Theater of the Russian Army in Budapest for dignitaries welcoming modern dance back into their country.
