Kenneth Laws

Kenneth Laws is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he started teaching in 1962. He earned B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in physics from Caltech, University of Pennsylvania, and Bryn Mawr College, respectively. For the last 26 years he has been studying classical ballet at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, serving also as adjunct teacher, occasional performer, and former President of its Board of Directors. Interest in applying physical principles to dance movement has led to numerous publications, lectures, and dance classes in the U.S. and abroad. Two books have been published by Schirmer Books: The Physics of Dance (1984), and Physics, Dance, and the Pas de Deux, with accompanying video cassette, co-authored by Cynthia Harvey (1994). A third book, Physics and the Art of Dance: Understanding Movement, is scheduled for publication in early 2002 by Oxford University Press. Over thirty articles have appeared in science publications such as American Scientist and Physics Today, and dance-related journals such as Dance Research Journal, Medical Problems of Performing Artists, Kinesiology for Dance, and Kinesiology and Medicine for Dance. These ideas have also been shared in numerous "physics of dance" presentations and physics-based ballet classes over the last 20 years.
